Fashion: A form of self-expression

COLYNCO BODY-POSITIVITY_ENGLISH Fashion: A form of self-expression

Fashion is a form of self-expression, a way to claim your space and to claim who you are. There is nothing so powerful as dressing exactly the way you feel, nothing so exciting as making a statement just by wearing certain clothes.

Every person has that ability; that right to express themselves using clothing, footwear, and accessories. We are all entitled to having a sense of fashion, it is the autonomy and freedom we own as individuals. Thanks to it, we can show our identity to the outside world, and we can tell them exactly who we are. All clothes make us look a certain way – confident, powerful, pretty – but only some also make us feel that way.

No matter who you are or where you came from, you have the right to look good and to feel good. Your body type, skin colour, gender, or age – it does not matter. Fashion is there, fashion is for all.

We have known this for a long time, but the fashion industry has been lagging behind. Young girls especially have been brainwashed into thinking that to be pretty, you have to be tall, slim and without curves. If you don’t fit into that narrow-minded standard, you don’t belong in the fashion world. Or so it is believed.

That ideal body we strive for, the only one promoted by the fashion industry, is for most an unattainable and unhealthy desire. Yet we still want to look that way, because then we are accepted. Then we have a ‘right’ to be fashionable, then we are fashion.

Of course, this is untrue. As said before, there is no body type whatsoever interconnected with fashion, and there is no body type that has an exclusive claim on it. All of it is taught us by the industry because even in 2022, discrimination happens way too often still.

However, things are changing. The conversation around body diversity has caught on and slowly but surely, we are seeing more representation. The plus-size models on catwalks or in magazines are no longer an exception, but a custom, more than ever before. Though the ‘perfect’ body stays heavily promoted, many have realized that all body types have a right to be shown and advertised. All body types are equally beautiful, equally honoured, and equally fashionable.

The world is changing, and we are changing with it. The time that a fashion show consisted of only one type of model is over. Right now, we are welcoming our unique diversity into the fashion world, and it can be seen everywhere. That is why we are inviting you, as a unique individual, to take your rightful place and own up to being fashionable, to looking good, and to feeling good. No matter who you are or where you came from, fashion is there, for you.
